My name is Reuben Smith. I’m 17 years old and studying for my A levels at Sir Joseph Williams Math School. I took up BMX racing in 2014 when I was seven and this has been my passion ever since. I have ADHD and find that training and racing helps me to control the condition and its daily challenges. BMX racing has also influenced other aspects of my life. I train three times a week at the gym and by researching fitness and health to support my training, it’s helped me choose my potential career path – I hope to go to university to study Sport Science.
What are your sporting achievements to date?
I have been racing since I was eight years old and my success nationally has allowed me to qualify for the World Championships for five years in a row, performing at a high standard in the three that I was able to compete in. I am a regular finalist at the British Championships, coming second in 2023. The 2024 season has been awesome for me as I’m the 2024 National BMX Racing Champion.
How has the FANS scheme helped you reach where you are now?
I am grateful for the financial support that FANS has given me over the years plus the opportunity to use facilities at Cyclopark Gravesend and Strood Leisure Centre to support my training and help facilitate my progress. I’d also like to thank Rochester Health Club and TNT BMX Club for their ongoing support.
What are your hopes and dreams for the future?
My dream is to become Olympic and World champion in BMX Racing. Following the 2024 season I want to win the World Championships in 2025 and then start racing the best of the best in Elite BMX racing.
