This year’s Safeguarding Adults Week is a powerful reminder that safeguarding isn’t just about responding to harm, it’s about preventing it. The theme, ‘Prevention: Act Before Abuse’, resonates deeply with me, both as a Sport Welfare Officer and as a coach at Limitless.
Professionally, safeguarding is at the heart of everything I do at Active Kent & Medway. Whether it’s through training, policy development, or supporting Club Welfare Officers, I’m committed to creating environments where everyone feels safe, respected and empowered. The week gives us all a chance to reflect on our practices, share learning, and amplify the voices of those we support. It’s also a time to celebrate the clubs and volunteers who go above and beyond to embed safeguarding into their culture.
On a personal level, coaching at Limitless really brings safeguarding to life. Based at Cyclopark in Gravesend, Limitless is part of British Cycling’s inclusive programme, offering disabled people of all ages and abilities the chance to experience the joy of cycling. Whether someone is trying a bike for the first time or training for competition, the club is a space where everyone is welcomed, supported and encouraged to thrive.
Earlier this year, we hosted an open morning at Cyclopark, and the energy was incredible. Seeing riders grow in confidence, make friends, and push their limits is a constant reminder of why safeguarding matters. It’s not just about policies, it’s about people. It’s about creating spaces where individuals feel seen, heard and safe to be themselves.
During Safeguarding Adults Week, I encourage everyone involved in sport and physical activity to reflect on how we can act earlier, listen more closely and build cultures that prevent harm before it happens. Because safeguarding isn’t a box to tick, it’s a commitment to care.
