I joined Cambridge Harriers in 1974 at the age of 23 and have carried on competing ever since. As I approached 40 years old, I realised that my times would probably rank me highly in Masters Competitions which proved a real incentive to keep at it! My sights have now been set on next year when I turn 75, as I really believe that I can run a top-quality time and earn myself a place near the top of the all-time list.
What are your sporting achievements to date?
I won the Kent Championships 400m at Erith in 1977 on a cinder track, in a time of 51.7. That year I also came 2nd in the 200m. My best times in my early years were 11.1 for the 100m in 1978, 22.5 for the 200m in 1984 and 50.9 for 400m in 1977.
My most notable achievements as a Masters athlete were coming second in the European Championships at Kristiansand in a time of 51.75 [aged 41], second in The European Championships 400m at Athens with a time of 51.08 [aged 43], and second in the 400m in the Inaugural European Indoor Championships at Birmingham with a time of 53.31 [aged 45]. I also came 4th in the European Championships at Potsdam with a time of 53.71 [aged 50].
I have also won a number of national medals and gained a place in the all-time ranking lists at three age groups M50, M65 and M70. Winning gold medals in the 400m relay at Kristiansand, Athens and Potsdam were most satisfying, as was being part of the M45 4 x400m relay team at Durban in 1997 where we achieved a world record.
How has the FANS scheme helped you reach where you are now?
The FANS scheme has been instrumental in allowing me to train regularly both on the track at the Julie Rose Stadium and at Kingsmead Leisure Centre. Numerous injuries have proved challenging and frustrating over the years, especially when speed and endurance developed over the winter has had to be sidelined until track work has become possible again. Use of the FANS scheme has enabled me to continue attending regular sessions in the gym and swimming pool in order to maintain my general fitness. Each injury has meant alternative sessions using the water belt, more weights and extra cycling while healing has taken place.
Without the FANS scheme I would have given up long ago!
Acceptance onto the FANS scheme has not only supported me in my recovery but has made me even more determined to prove myself and justify my inclusion on the scheme. Knowing that others believe in my ability and are willing to support me is a tremendous incentive. I would definitely recommend the scheme as it has been instrumental in keeping me going over the years.
What are your hopes and dreams for the future?
Racing the clock and achieving respectable times remains my goal and as long as I am fit and well, I will endeavour to prove that athletics is a sport for all ages. I do not want to give up running yet, as it has given me a lot of pleasure and immense satisfaction in trying to defy the ravages of time and keep in the top rankings of my favourite sport.
