Active Kent & Medway, in collaboration with Active Dorset, University of Kent, Canterbury City Council and Sport England, is proud to announce the launch of a pioneering Needs Assessment Training Module developed by Bennett Leisure and Planning Ltd. This initiative marks a significant step forward in creating a standardised approach to data collection for Playing Pitch Strategies, ensuring consistency and quality across our region.

The training module is designed to:

  • Equip learners with the skills to conduct robust site audits aligned with Sport England’s Needs Assessment Guidance.
  • Build a knowledgeable workforce capable of supporting sports facility planning and strategy.
  • Deepen understanding of the purpose and methodology behind Sports Facility and Playing Pitch Strategies.

Participants will gain expertise in:

  • Identifying key components of sports facilities.
  • Applying effective evaluation methods to assess current and future adequacy.
  • Supporting evidence-based planning decisions that align with national guidance and local priorities.

The first roll-out of the Needs Assessment Training Module will take place at University of Kent, Canterbury and Bournemouth University from December 2025, ahead of data collection in the new year. This work will inform local authorities’ Local Plans, ensuring communities have access to the facilities they need to stay active.

Playing Pitch Strategies are vital because they:

  • assess demand based on population growth, participation trends, and club requirements.
  • identify gaps and surpluses in provision to guide resource allocation.
  • support planning decisions by aligning development proposals with national guidance and local priorities.
  • secure investment and developer contributions through clear, justified strategies.
  • safeguard existing facilities from inappropriate development while promoting sustainable improvements.

“This trailblazing initiative demonstrates the power of partnership in shaping the future of data collection for sports infrastructure and strategy. With the right tools and knowledge, we can make evidence-based decisions that truly reflect the needs of our communities.”

Sophie Ward, Strategic Lead for Partnerships and Community, Active Kent & Medway

“This is a hugely exciting piece of work which we believe will equip students with sound knowledge of these important strategies, helping them as they progress in their careers. The collaborative delivery demonstrates the power of partnership working and how innovative approaches can transform delivery.”

Martin Kimberley, CEO, Active Dorset
