Ava ChappellI started swimming and running at primary school but it wasn’t until I moved schools that I was introduced to Modern Pentathlon. One of the PE teachers was a Modern Pentathlon World Champion and had competed at the 2012 Olympics in London. Six years on and I now train and compete in the five disciplines that make up Modern Pentathlon. Fencing, swimming, shooting, running and OCR. I am part of Pentathlon GB’s development group and have had the opportunity to travel all around the world doing the sports I love.

What are your sporting achievements to date?

I have represented Great Britain in European Biathle, Triathle and Laser run at World and European Championships with several podium finishes and Gold in the European mixed Laser run relay.

How has the FANS scheme helped you reach where you are now?

The FANS scheme is a huge support allowing me to make use of my local track at the Julie Rose Stadium in Ashford, and the pool and gym at the Stour Centre. I was lucky enough to receive a small grant this year and have been able to put that towards buying new fencing equipment. I definitely recommend the FANS scheme to others. Just do it! The access to great facilities across Kent will really help you, giving you the edge over other competitors.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

I dream of making it to the Olympics! Short term I would like to get selected to compete in the U17 European Modern Pentathlon Championships next summer. More importantly I want to continue to enjoy all my sports and the opportunities and friends it continues to give me.

Thank you Ava for sharing your story. We wish you all the best and look forward to following your sporting journey.
