Project Overview:

Snowdown Colliery RFC is a rugby and football club based in Aylesham, a former mining community between Dover and Canterbury. Aylesham is expanding with new houses bringing new communities to the area so the club wanted to organise a community activity day to bring new and old villagers together.

A range of local organisations across sports and culture were invited to showcase their offerings to encourage new members. These included Snowdown Colliery Male Voice Choir, Snowdown Colliery Brass Band, Aylesham Majorettes Association and Aylesham Community Workshop Trust. Snowdown Colliery RFC provided an opportunity for local residents to get active through a five-a-side football competition. Funding was used to buy equipment for the 12 teams who registered to take part.

Organisation Impact:

  • Helped develop new relationships other local organisations
  • Helped increase confidence to deliver sport and physical activity
  • Helped attract new participants
  • Provided recognition for the work the club are doing in the community

Community Impact:

  • Helped create a local community with more confidence to be active
  • Provided the community with more opportunities to be active
  • Helped individuals connect with their local community
  • Mixing of communities

“Our Community Day aspired to show the heritage and traditions of the village while welcoming all old and new members of the community along to get involved”.

Tommy Johnstone, Club Secretary

Key Learnings:

Offer a variety of sports. To engage a wider audience involve more local sporting activities. This allows more clubs to showcase their offerings and gives the local community an opportunity to try other sports and activities.

Work with local partners. Work with other local organisations to bring together knowledge, skills and resources, enhancing opportunities. Tapping into different experiences and opinions can create joined up solutions and new ideas.

“We are proud that our first Community Day was a success, but we are keen to build on the platform we have created and to include more sports to hopefully include more people, girls, younger and elderly residents.”

Tommy Johnstone, Club Secretary

Next Steps:

After the success of the day, the club plan to make it an annual event and expand the sport provision further with athletics, netball and possibly bowls to make the day appeal to a wider audience. Volunteers have already been recruited to help set up and run the event and he club are reaching out to local partners and businesses to cover various outgoings to keep the event free of charge, which will hopefully make the event more inclusive and increase attendance.
