Maria Callow profile picI bring over 30 years of experience in strategic communications and am a qualified Health and Wellbeing Coach accredited by the NHS Personalised Care Institute (PCI). I’m also an active member of my local Patient Participation Group and helped Hamstreet Surgery achieve the RCGP Active Practice Charter. I’m committed to helping people lead healthier, more active lives in ways that work for them.

Becoming an Everyday Active Champion felt like a natural step for me. I know it’s not always easy to fit more activity into daily life, but small steps can make a big difference. I love connecting with others, sharing inspiring stories, and showing how movement can improve wellbeing for people of all ages and abilities.

I’m based in rural Ashford, an area blessed with natural beauty and ample opportunities for outdoor activities. I took on the volunteer role to support my local community and encourage active living. I thrive on highlighting positive changes and promoting resources that help people get moving.

Ashford boasts two National Landscapes – High Weald and Kent Downs – along with the Royal Military Canal and wonderful open spaces, parks, lakes, and riversides. It’s a privilege to highlight these wonderful assets and help promote providers and partners that offer a wide range of activities that can fit into our busy lives.

As an Everyday Active Champion, I share information, connect people with resources, and celebrate local activities. It’s incredibly rewarding to see people find activities they enjoy and take steps towards better health. One of the highlights is collaborating with local partners to spread the word about new groups, events, and offers that make being active more accessible.

The role is flexible and welcoming, so it’s easy to get involved, even if you’ve never volunteered before. The Active Kent & Medway team offers amazing support and guidance from the start. You don’t need to be an expert – just a willingness to inspire others to move more in their own way – whether it’s 10 minutes a day or 10k a month.

If you’re considering becoming an Everyday Active Champion, my advice is simple: go for it! It’s a chance to give back to your community, inspire others, and join a supportive network that values your efforts. Do your bit to help share fun activities to help give others a boost and feel good.
