Overview

Take Pride CIC wanted to run a festival targeting pupils who were disengaged with physical activity but would benefit most from engaging to give them the confidence and competence to excel in other areas of the curriculum. Open to both mainstream and special schools the festival was designed to combine literacy with physical education.

The books of Sammy Rambles were brought to life through the sport of Dragonball. In the morning pupils worked with Author JT Scott, who told the story of a boy, Sammy Rambles, who went from being bullied at school to making new friends and learning skills to save the dragon world. Pupils used storytelling to bring the characters to life and used their creative side to create their own pet dragons. After lunch the pupils had the chance to get more active and learn how to play Dragonball, a multi-skill activity where players use their hands and feet to kick, throw and pass Dragonballs in teams to score goals.

Impact

  • Dragonball equipmentStaff noted pupils enjoyment and fully participated in all aspects of the festival, in particular pupils who sometimes find it difficult to stay on task
  • Everyone, regardless of ability took part in an inclusive, welcoming environment
  • Created a space where everyone felt valued and included
  • Pupils learnt about and used the 7 pillars of Dragonball – Communication, Teamwork, Empathy, Respect, Self-Belief, Collaboration, Inclusiveness, and Fun.

“Delighted to see children on task that would normally struggle within the classroom.” Teacher

Key Learning

Share event details: Provide event details, information and guidance to schools in advance. This allows schools to prepare pupils who find it challenging to engage in activity outside of their school environment.

Bring a topic to life: To encourage active learning look at ways you can bring the curriculum to life through activity. Dragonball does this by combining literacy and physical activity. This is a great way to engage pupils who don’t normally engage in activity.

“Best day ever!” Pupil
