While being active and playing sport can have a positive impact on mental wellbeing, there are times when participants, volunteers or coaches may need extra support. Our Mental Health Support Framework has been developed to help clubs build confidence, knowledge and practical skills to support mental wellbeing in the right way, at the right time. The framework is flexible and has three levels of support, recognising that every club is different. Whether you are just starting to think about mental health, or looking to strengthen the support you already offer, you can engage at a level that suits your club.

The Three Levels of Support

Level 1: Awareness and Signposting

For all clubs. This level helps clubs take simple, positive steps to support mental wellbeing. The focus is on raising awareness, reducing stigma and making sure people know where to go for help. Support includes:

  • Ready‑to‑use posters and communications
  • Clear signposting to local and national mental health services
  • Access to short, online mental health awareness learning

Level 2: Enhanced Understanding and Club Planning

For clubs ready to build confidence and consistency. This level supports clubs to go further by developing understanding and embedding good practice. In addition to Level 1, clubs receive:

  • Access to recognised mental health training
  • Support to begin developing a Club Mental Health Plan
  • Ongoing guidance from a Sport Welfare Officer

Level 3: Advanced Training and Capacity Building

For clubs building long‑term internal capacity. This level is for clubs who want to strengthen their workforce and create sustainable support from within the club. Alongside Levels 1 and 2, clubs can access:

  • Advanced mental health training and mental health first aid training
  • Grant support to help remove financial barriers to the training
