Overview
To support clubs, coaches and volunteers to deliver more inclusive cycling opportunities, Active Kent & Medway worked in partnership with Activity Alliance to deliver a tailored Inclusive Activity Award – Cycling workshop at Cyclopark in Kent. The workshop built on Activity Alliance’s nationally recognised Inclusive Activity Award and was adapted specifically for cycling, ensuring the learning was relevant, practical and grounded in real-world environments.
Hosted at Cyclopark, the session made full use of the venue’s adaptive cycle fleet and inclusive facilities, giving attendees the opportunity to explore how inclusive principles can be embedded into cycling sessions for people with differing needs and abilities.
Inclusive Activity Award Workshop
The cycling-specific workshop was designed to increase attendees’ confidence and capability to deliver inclusive cycling sessions by:
- Developing understanding of disability inclusion in a cycling context
- Exploring the Activity Inclusion Model (AIM) and how it can be applied in practice
- Providing hands-on experience with adaptive cycles and inclusive equipment
- Supporting coaches and volunteers to create welcoming, flexible and engaging sessions for everyone
By tailoring the practical elements to cycling and delivering them in a live, inclusive environment, attendees were able to build both knowledge and confidence they could immediately take back into their clubs and organisations.
Attendee Feedback
The workshop brought together coaches and volunteers from a range of local organisations, including:
- Cyclopark
- Limitless at Cyclopark Cycling Club
- Community Cycleworks
- The Canterbury Bike Project
- Cycling instructors from Kent County Council
This mix of attendees supported shared learning, discussion and peer-to-peer insight across clubs and community settings. Feedback from attendees highlighted both the practical value of the session and the confidence gained in delivering inclusive activity:
“A great morning at Cyclopark today, developing our skills and awareness of how to deliver accessible activities.”
“It was brilliant – thank you so much for organising.”
Reflecting on the impact of the workshop, Jimmy McCormack, Sport Welfare Officer, Active Kent & Medway said:
“Fantastic day at Cyclopark with Activity Alliance, raising understanding and awareness around disability inclusion in sport, particularly cycling. There was lots of energy and enthusiasm from all the attendees. Everyone learnt a huge amount that they can now take away, apply, and share within their clubs and local organisations.”
