Our Commitment
Active Kent and Medway recognises the urgent need to address climate change and biodiversity loss, and the role our organisation can play in promoting environmental sustainability through sport and physical activity. We are committed to embedding sustainability into our operations, projects, and partnerships, in alignment with:
- The Active Partnerships Environmental Sustainability Commitment
- The Kent County Council Environment Environment Plan 2025
- The Kent and Medway Energy and Low Emissions Strategy
- The KCC Net Zero Action Plan
We understand that those facing the greatest inequalities are often most impacted by environmental challenges. Therefore, our approach to sustainability is rooted in equity, inclusion, and community empowerment.
Strategic Priorities
We will focus our efforts on five key areas:
- Embedding Environmental Sustainability – Integrate sustainable practices into our daily operations, decision-making, and organisational culture.
- Joining the Movement Against Climate Change – Actively participate in local and national initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and promote climate resilience.
- Designing and Promoting Active Environments – Support the development of spaces that encourage physical activity and are environmentally sustainable.
- Advocating for Access to Blue and Green Spaces – Champion the protection and use of natural environments for physical activity and wellbeing.
- Addressing Inequality – Ensure that our sustainability efforts benefit all communities, especially those most vulnerable to environmental harm.
Operational Actions
To deliver on our commitments, we will:
- Reduce resource consumption by minimising waste, reusing materials, and choosing sustainable suppliers.
- Limit business travel and promote virtual meetings where appropriate.
- Avoid single-use plastics, including branded pens and laminating materials.
- Promote sustainable procurement, prioritising suppliers with strong environmental credentials.
- Encourage active travel and support initiatives that promote walking, cycling, and public transport.
- Celebrate environmental campaigns such as Earth Day, Greener Kent and Clean Air Day | Action for Clean Air , integrating them with physical activity initiatives.
- Monitor and report on our environmental impact, including mileage, printing, and waste.
- Empower our team through education, discussion, and the work of our Environmental Champion.
