Helping you create a safe, welcoming and understanding environment for people who are fasting during Ramadan while still wishing to stay active.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a sacred period of fasting, prayer, reflection and community. In 2026, Ramadan is expected to begin on the evening of Tuesday 17 February and end on either the evening of 18 March or 19 March, depending on the sighting of the moon.

Fasting from sunrise to sunset changes people’s energy levels, hydration, sleep and concentration. Everyone experiences fasting differently. Your awareness, flexibility and empathy will help participants feel supported and included in your sessions.

Create an Inclusive, Supportive Atmosphere

  • Avoid assumptions. Ask participants what support or adjustments they may need.
  • Build in more rest periods and optional activities.
  • Celebrate and respect the significance of Ramadan.
  • Consider low key social or walking based activities after Iftar (sunset meal) to build community connection.

Communicate Clearly

  • Let members know if sessions will be adapted during Ramadan.
  • Provide reassurance that all abilities and energy levels are welcome.
  • Encourage open conversation with coaches and volunteers.

Adjust Activity Intensity

  • Offer lighter options such as walking, mobility, stretching or low‑impact aerobics.
  • Reduce running volumes, heavy lifting or continuous high‑intensity drills.
  • Encourage members to focus on maintaining activity, not chasing performance.

Encourage People to Listen to Their Bodies

  • Reassure participants that it’s absolutely fine to reduce intensity or skip a session.
  • Support participants who may arrive tired or thirsty, allow more breaks.
  • Remind participants to drink water between sunset and sunrise.
  • If someone feels dizzy, light‑headed or unwell, encourage them to stop immediately and rest.
  • Offer alternatives and be open to last‑minute adjustments.

By creating an environment that respects fasting and supports safe participation, you help everyone continue moving in ways that feel right for them, physically, socially and culturally.
