Walking Football
Women
Project Overview:
Sheppey Warriors Walking Football Club, based in Sheerness, deliver walking football sessions for over fifties who want to stay active and miss the sense of community that traditional football provides. Having recently established a women’s team for those over thirty, the club wanted to introduce more women to the sport, including those from under-represented groups who might not have had access previously. To achieve this, they hosted community engagement events, open days, and introductory sessions to reach a broader audience.
The club used the small grant to upgrade their existing equipment to make it more accessible and functional. This equipment not only catered for beginners but also supported the development of advanced skills for more experienced members. The variety of equipment ensured that all participants, regardless of their skill levels, had the tools needed to take part and thrive.
Organisation Impact:
- Increased confidence to deliver sport and physical activity
- Helped reach organisational goals
- Empowered organisation to create a sustainable model for future development
- Improved facilities and accessibility
Community Impact:
- Fostered a sense of inclusivity
- Strengthened community engagement
- Increased participation rates and positive feedback from the community
- Boosted team morale
Key Learnings:
Accessibility: Make facilities and programmes accessible to all, including individuals with disabilities or those with limited financial means. We recommend Buddle’s Disability Inclusion Hub, an online tool to support clubs and community organisations to improve their delivery and accessible opportunities.
Partnership Working: To resolve any accessibility issues, the club consulted with accessibility experts, those with lived experiences and local disability advocacy groups to make meaningful changes. Additionally, after listening to members they introduced subsidised or free sessions for individuals from low-income households.
“By removing financial and logistical barriers we encouraged broad participation and fostered a sense of community through sport”. Kevin, Sheppey Warriors
Next Steps:
The club has introduced ongoing programs like skill-building workshops, seasonal competitions, and community challenges to retain new participants. Regular feedback from participants has helped to refine their approach to keep the sessions engaging.
