The Alzheimer’s Society, in partnership with Maidstone Leisure Centre, developed a physical activity group for people with young onset dementia. Representatives from the organisation consulted with people with young onset dementia, to find out what activities they would like to do, and the idea of a sports or physical activity session was popular.
Working with Maidstone Leisure Centre, staff were trained to become Dementia Friends, and venues were assessed and adapted where necessary to ensure they are an environment suitable for people living with dementia.
The sessions, which take place twice a month, have seen a 100 per cent satisfaction rate, and participants have really bonded with each other during the time they spend at the sessions. The plan for the future is to ensure the sessions are sustainable by encouraging volunteers to run and manage the programme.
